Marshland Access will be closed to all public entry starting Monday, July 22nd for a road improvement project. Work is expected to be completed within eight weeks. The Marshland Access road project will provide safer access from State Highway 35 and improve the condition of the entire access road. This road improvement project is part of a larger project to improve access on both roads, the Marshland Access, and the Main Entrance Road.
Detour signs will route visitors to the Main Entrance Road. In the event that the Main Entrance Road is closed due to flooding while Marshland Access is also closed, there will be no access to the refuge.

This 6,808 acre refuge lies within the Mississippi River. The rolling prairies, rich wetlands and bottomland forests support a variety of wildlife species. These backwaters of the river provide resting and feeding areas for both waterfowl and other birds.
